Thomas Edison once said, “Opportunity is missed by many because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”
When faced with a large, or complicated project, it’s almost too easy for the mind to put it off until the very last minute. This is when most people start to procrastinate, and if nothing is done about it, it becomes a habit.
Fortunately, it’s also just as easy to stop yourself from procrastinating. Here are 4 ways to stop the small, common mistakes that lead to procrastination:
- Lack Of Focus
Often, when working on a complicated project, our minds tend to focus too much on the large picture, thus overwhelming ourselves. It’s not that we’re not focused, it’s that we’re focused on the wrong thing.
To counter this, start off by creating small goals, and then focusing on those. Get a timer, and set aside a time (for instance, in 15 or 30 minute windows) to dedicate your focus purely on that small goal.
With a proper checklist, you would feel much more motivated to accomplish your smaller goals as opposed to trying to take in everything at once.
- Mastering Everything At The Same Time
If you feel that you’re being spread out too thin, you’re not alone. It’s good to want to keep learning, and then applying what you’ve learned as soon as possible. It’s bad to stretch yourself thin thinking you can do it all in one sitting.
It’s time to segregate your learning goals. Slow down and start focusing on an area that would benefit you the most. After that, you can start to work on other areas at a much more digestible pace.
- Lack Of Clarity
This is crucial as work cannot be done if a task or its variables are not laid out properly, effectively killing all forms of productivity.
The best way to counter this, as all successful people do, would be to write down a plan of action every day. By writing your goals and needs down, you are more inclined to take action and to see it through. If you’re unsure of how to start, it’s as simple as taking a notepad and pen with you everywhere you go!
